The Caribbean region is considered to be one of the most vulnerable regions in the world to the projected impacts of climate change.There are twenty Caribbean islands within the region that are Small Island Developing States (SIDS). SIDS are said to be most vulnerable to the projected climate change impacts of extreme events and sea level rise. These impacts may have direct or indirect effects on Caribbean countries environmental resources, economies and populations.
Coral bleaching and coastal erosion poses major problems to Caribbean countries as global warming continues to take place. Many coral reefs in the Caribbean region have already undergone mass bleaching, as was the case of the 1995 mass coral bleaching event throughout the Caribbean region. Many of the coral reefs in the Caribbean region still have not fully recovered from such event and continues to experience bleaching.
The lack of coastal protection due coastal erosion and degradation of coral reefs exacerbates the potential impacts of sea level rise to SIDS. These impacts include increase flood events, storm surges and further erosion which in turn affects our livelihoods and economies. Hence, it is in our best interest to develop strategies and a plan of action to minimize the projected impacts of climate change on our region .
So i have this great passion for the environment especially in the field of marine conservation and i am a travel enthusiast. This passion have led me to different countries and places. I have also experienced a variety of cultures as I lived abroad semi temporarily to pursue studies at undergraduate and graduate levels. I lived in Jamaica for three years and in Belize for a year and a half. I am also an adventure and thrill seeker and lives for outdoor expeditions. As such, i started documenting my experiences through facebook and instagram using photographs. Have you ever been to Aripo Savannas ? The Aripo Savannas is situated between Valencia , Cumuto and Sangre Grande in the eastern central part of the Caroni plain and consists of ten savannas in total .It is our only natural savanna in Trinidad and comprise mainly of mash forest.
The savanna and marsh area cover approximately 1,800 hectares. The Aripo Savannas consist of a wide variety of unique flora and fauna. A few of these unique flora include : Sundew (Drosera capillaries) , which is an
insect eating plant,Bladderworts ( Ultricularis spp.) and Ground orchids. In the 1970s, Aripo Savannas were declared a scientific reserved due to its rich biological diversity and scientific value. Additionally, extractive uses were legally restricted in 1987. The Aripo Savannas continued to experience threats to its biodiversity from fires,poaching, residential and agricultural squatting and quarrying. This led to its declaration in 2007 by the Environmental Management Authority as an Environmentally Sensitive Area ,in order to protect and preserve this fragile ecosystem of its rare and endangered species.
